B.C. Access Grant for Deaf Students

This grant helps deaf and hard of hearing students with the additional costs incurred while attending specialized post-secondary institutions where curriculum is delivered in American Sign Language.

Am I eligible?

You may be eligible if you:

  • establish that you are deaf or hard of hearing
  • can demonstrate financial need
  • are attending an eligible institution (see below)
  • are enrolled in full-time course load (60 percent or greater).

Eligible institutions

  • Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
  • National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York

How do I apply?

Instructions

  1. 1 Complete the Appendix 8 for Full-Time Students - Disability Programs Application form.
    Section 4: Verification of Disability (Permanent or Persistent/Prolonged) must be completed by a qualified medical assessor.
  2. 2 Submit the documentation along with an audiogram to StudentAid BC for assessment. Please remember to indicate the post-secondary institution you will be attending.
You do not need to complete Section 4 of the Appendix 8 if your disability status has previously been verified by StudentAid BC.

Depending on your need, grants of up to $10,000 ($12,000 if an attendant is required at school) are available to students attending public and private post-secondary schools in B.C.

You can only receive this grant when you have used up all available funds through the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment – Students with Disabilities (CSG-DSE).

Am I eligible?

You may be eligible if you:

  • are a student with a permanent disability, or a persistent or prolonged disability;
  • are enrolled at a designated private or public post-secondary institution in B.C.; and
  • are in developmental program/courses (upgrading, English as a Second Language or Adult Special Education); or
  • are studying at the post-secondary level and have exhausted CSG-DSE funding
