How do I rehabilitate my B.C. student loan after I’ve defaulted on my repayment?

Repay your outstanding student loan balance in full including all associated fees noted on your account and any accrued interest.
OR
Repay all outstanding interest owing, all associated fees, and then proceed to make two monthly loan payments based on the payment schedule set-up with RSBC.
OR
Make one lump sum payment which covers all your outstanding interest and all associated fees plus two monthly payments based on the payment schedule set up with the RSBC.

How do I know when my B.C. student loan has been rehabilitated?

When your B.C. government-issued student loan rehabilitation has been successfully completed, you will receive a letter from the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) notifying that your B.C. student loan has been rehabilitated and that it has been transferred to the NSLSC for collection management.

If you hold a Risk-Shared or Guaranteed student loan and your rehabilitation has been successfully completed, you will receive a letter from StudentAid BC notifying you that your loan has been rehabilitated and RSBC will contact you regarding continued repayment.

Example of Loan Rehabilitation

You owe $1,000 in interest charges and have no NSF charges and other fees associated with your B.C. student loan. You have a payment schedule set up with the RSBC for a monthly repayment amount of $200. You have three options to rehabilitate your loan:

Option 1:

  • Repay the $1,000 outstanding interest balance in either one lump sum or over multiple payments.
  • Make your first required monthly payment of $200.
  • Make your second required monthly payment of $200.

Option 2:

  • Repay the $1,000 outstanding interest balance in either one lump sum or over multiple payments.
  • Make one lump sum payment of $400 to cover the equivalent of the two monthly required payments.

Option 3:

  • Make one lump sum payment of $1,400 to cover the outstanding interest charges of $1,000 and the two monthly required payments of $400.
